Dr. A. Veeraragavan is currently working as a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Madras. He graduated in B.E. in Civil Engineering from Annamalai University, M.Tech. in Civil-Transportation Engineering from IIT Madras and PhD in Civil Engineering from Bangalore University.

His areas of research include Highway and Airfield Pavements – Design, construction and asset management, Forensic Investigation of pre-mature failure of highway and airfield pavements, Sustainable highway pavements – Recycling techniques and use of innovative materials, low volume roads – Design, construction and maintenance management, and Engineering measures to enhance road safety under mixed traffic.

His research work on structural condition evaluation of in-service highway pavements led to the formulation of a new code of practice for the design of overlays in India.His pioneering research works led to revision of several codes of practice by the IRC and he holds the record for the highest number of papers presented and discussed at the annual sessions of the Indian Roads Congress, earning twelve awards and commendation certificates for his outstanding and highly commended research papers. He has won many accolades, awards and plaque of Honour in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Academics and Research in the field of Civil - Highway Engineering. His books on Highway Engineering, Highway Materials and Pavement Testing, Surveying and Pavement Drainage – Theory and Practice are quite popular among students and practicing engineers.

Prof. Veeraragavan is a member of the Highway Research Board, Flexible Pavement Committee, Composite Pavement Committee, Road Maintenance and Asset Management Committee and Specifications and Standards Committee of the Indian Roads Congress. He is a member of the National Panel of Experts constituted by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highway to introduce new materials, technology and equipment in road construction. He is also a member of the standing advisory committee of the National Rural Infrastructure Development Agency of the Ministry of Rural Development, Govt. of India for introduction of new materials and technology in rural road construction.

He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India) and the International Society for Engineering Asset Management. He is a Life Member of the Indian Roads Congress, Institute of Urban Transport and Indian Society for Technical Education. He is a member of several research institutes, professional organisations and Government user organisations and National level Committees. He played the role of co-ordinator for several research and consultancy projects at National and international level.

He holds the position of Independent Director in three road infrastructure companies. He is a member of the Technical Committee of the Karnataka Road Development Corporation. Currently, he is a Technical Advisor to RASTA - Centre for Road Technology at Volvo Campus in Bangalore. He has published over 250 research papers in National and International Journals and conferences in the field of road infrastructure engineering. He has conducted several training courses for practicing engineers on road construction practices and road safety engineering.
